Delta Police Overview

History of Delta Police

The Delta Police Department was one of the first Municipal Police Departments created in British Columbia, founded in 1888. At that time, the department consisted of a single Constable, responsible for patrolling Ladner during daylight hours. When lumber theft was no longer the most serious issue for police to contend with, the Delta Police Department was forced to expand, growing into a full-time operation in the 1950’s. Now, Delta is home to over 100,000 residents, and is policed by a force of over 185 members.

Though Delta’s population (and its police force) has grown, Delta remains a police service connected to its community. The Delta Police are proud to have provided over 125 years of policing to a community with a changing landscape while never changing our philosophy – No call too small.

The book Building on the Past, Focused on the Future was produced to commemorate our 125 year anniversary, and provides a fascinating, in-depth look at how the Delta Police has grown and changed throughout the last century. These books are available for purchase for $20 at Delta Police Headquarters, the North Delta Public Safety Building, and North Delta CoPS.
