The use of crime prevention techniques in the urban design process has become essential to ensure safe urban environments in present day society.  Environmental criminologists have used their theories in conjunction with police in British Columbia trained in crime analysis and prevention techniques.  The result is a powerful tool for urban safety initiatives known as Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).

The District Community Police Offices offer CPTED assessments of your businesses or private residences.  A team of volunteers with specialized training in CPTED principles will attend your home or business and provide recommendations on how to make it a safer place.

Victims of break and enters are referred to this program however, this free service is available to anyone. The CPTED members examine a number of factors in their assessment of the property.  As an example, reinforcement of the area, access control, design considerations, parking, landscaping, lighting, and fencing are some of the factors considered.

The design of your business or residence is thoroughly examined by the CPTED members for the identification and reduction of opportunities for crime.
